The idea for the ‘Mine of Knowledge’ editathon arose from the Guinness World Record attempt for the longest edit of the Polish Wikipedia.

Open consultations among community members showed that as a community of Polish Wikipedians, we need joint editathons and challenges related to the unusual location of such an event. The choice therefore fell on the Guido Mine in Zabrze.

Venue

The conference room that will be adapted for the editathon is located approximately 320 metres underground. It can be reached by four small mine lifts. Each lift can hold up to eight people, and the four lifts move together, so up to 24 people can be transported at a time. The lifts take about two minutes to reach the conference room. They are partially open to the shaft, and the interior is austere, dark, and sometimes noisy and exciting :)

Below ground, at the conference room level, we will be guided by Mine employees. There are toilets near the room, including toilets for people with reduced mobility, and there is also a smoking room. Coffee breaks, lunch and refreshments after the editathon are planned.

Marking editions

Remember to tag your edits during the event. To do this, we will use hashtags appropriate for each language group:

#KopalniaWiedzy - Polish

#WissensGrube - German

#DůlZnalostí - Czech

#KopalniaWiydzy - Silesian

#KnowledgeMine - other languages

We add the relevant hashtags ADDITIONALLY to the Description of Changes field (displayed before the edit is published) - this will enable the edits to be counted at the end of the event.

General principles

  • The editathon will take place in the conference room at the Mine.
  • We will be editing the Polish, Silesian, Czech and German Wikipedia articles on the “”'Heritage of the Silesian Region and Province'“”.
  • register for the editathon at the event registration point at the Mine from 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 4 October, or on Friday, 3 October, at the hotel, where you will receive a wristband
  • descend underground with Mine employees on the day of the event between 9:00 a.m. and 9:45 a.m.
  • The editathon lasts from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • The Mine plans to bring participants back to the surface at full hours
  • Due to the large number of visitors on Saturdays, the Mine does not guarantee descent underground on request after 10:00 a.m.

Due to the specific nature of the venue, WMPL, as the organiser, will provide space at the Diament Plaza Hotel for joint editing for those who decide not to travel to the mine.
